Every 4× Weakness in Gen 9 (And How to Play Around Them)
Every 4× Weakness in Gen 9 (And How to Play Around Them)
A 4× weakness is 2× times 2×. Both defending types are weak to the same attack, and the Pokémon that stays in takes it. This page lists all 53 dual-type pairs on the Generation 6–9 chart, Fairy included. Eight are 4× to two attacks. Four have no Pokémon through Generation 9. A single type stops at 2×: pure Rock takes Fighting at 2×, and Rock/Dark takes it at 4×.
Multiply with the dual-type chart guide, then place the pair on a sheet with the team-building guide. Confirm it in the Dual Type Calculator, or filter the dual-type chart with Has a 4× weakness. Older names such as Heatran use this same chart. Pokémon GO uses 1.6× and 2.56×. Raids belong on the Pokémon GO type chart.
Read this before the buckets
A normal Tera type replaces both defending types. Fire Tera Charizard still takes Rock at 2×. Steel or Ground Tera takes Rock at 0.5×. Stellar Tera, in Tera Raid Battles, keeps the original defense. Read the new type on the calculator.
Stealth Rock deals half of maximum HP to every pair in the Rock section. Heavy-Duty Boots or removal comes before the Rock move. A resistance Berry halves one super-effective hit, so the 4× lands at 2× once. Yache is Ice, Charti is Rock, and Shuca is Ground.
Levitate, Flash Fire, and Sap Sipper can make the product 0×. The ability chart prints the ability beside the multiplier. Mold Breaker Earthquake from Excadrill hits Levitate and misses a Flying type. Thousand Arrows hits both. Rain turns a 4× Fire hit into 2× before stats. Sun multiplies Fire by 1.5×, so that hit lands at 6×. The STAB guide adds the separate 1.5× when the attacker shares the move's type.
Eight typings with two 4× attacks
| Typing | 4× attacks | Pokémon |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Rock | Water and Ground | Hisuian Arcanine, Coalossal |
| Ground/Rock | Water and Grass | Rhyperior, Golem |
| Rock/Steel | Fighting and Ground | Aggron |
| Ice/Rock | Fighting and Steel | Hisuian Avalugg, Aurorus |
| Ice/Steel | Fire and Fighting | Alolan Sandslash |
| Ice/Bug | Fire and Rock | Frosmoth |
| Grass/Bug | Fire and Flying | Parasect, Leavanny |
| Psychic/Ghost | Ghost and Dark | Calyrex-Shadow, Lunala |
Hisuian Arcanine's Intimidate lowers Attack, and Surf ignores it. Tera Grass resists Water and Ground, so both products become 0.5×. Rhyperior's Solid Rock turns 4× into 3×, and a STAB Surf into 55 Special Defense is still knockout range. Frosmoth's Ice Scales halves special damage and leaves Stealth Rock at 50% and a physical Stone Edge at 4×.
Ground
Ground is 2× into Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, and Steel, so any pair from that list is 4×. The row is on the Ground type page. Great Tusk's Headlong Rush is the Generation 9 hit.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Steel | Heatran | — |
| Electric/Steel | Magnezone | — |
| Electric/Poison | Toxtricity | — |
| Poison/Rock | Glimmora | — |
| Poison/Steel | Revavroom | — |
| Electric/Rock | Iron Thorns, Alolan Golem | — |
| Fire/Poison | Salazzle | — |
| Fire/Electric | Rotom-Heat | — |
| Fire/Rock | Hisuian Arcanine, Coalossal | Water |
| Rock/Steel | Aggron | Fighting |
Heatran takes Earthquake at 4×, and at 6× with STAB. The Fire/Steel guide has the rest of the row. Glimmora, Revavroom, and Iron Thorns are the Generation 9 pairs. Rotom-Heat's chart line is 4× Ground, and Levitate makes that 0× until the move ignores abilities.
A Flying switch blanks Earthquake, Mold Breaker included, because the immunity is the typing. A Levitate switch blanks a normal Earthquake and loses to Mold Breaker and to Thousand Arrows. Tera Flying makes Ground 0×. Tera Bug or Tera Grass resists it at 0.5×.
Fighting
Fighting is 2× into Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel. See Fighting. Close Combat from Great Tusk or Iron Valiant is 4×. Mach Punch is the same product at priority.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Dark/Steel | Kingambit, Bisharp | — |
| Rock/Dark | Tyranitar | — |
| Ice/Dark | Weavile, Chien-Pao | — |
| Normal/Dark | Obstagoon, Alolan Raticate | — |
| Ice/Steel | Alolan Sandslash | Fire |
| Ice/Rock | Hisuian Avalugg, Aurorus | Steel |
| Rock/Steel | Aggron | Ground |
| Normal/Ice | No Pokémon through Gen 9 | — |
| Normal/Rock | No Pokémon through Gen 9 | — |
| Normal/Steel | No Pokémon through Gen 9 | — |
Kingambit is the Generation 9 case. Dragapult, Gholdengo, and Annihilape are immune to Fighting. Corviknight takes Close Combat at 0.25×, Kowtow Cleave at 1×, and Iron Head at 0.5×. The Dark move after a Ghost switch is 2× into that Ghost. Tera Ghost on Kingambit makes Fighting 0×, and Tera Flying makes it 0.5×. Either Tera drops the Dark/Steel resists Kingambit was brought for.
Corviknight takes Tyranitar's Earthquake at 0× and Stone Edge at 1×. Switch for Close Combat and Earthquake, then respect Rock. Chien-Pao and Weavile are frail Ice/Dark. Dragapult is immune to their Fighting moves and takes Ice at 2×. Gholdengo is immune to Fighting and resists Ice at 0.5×. Crunch is 2× into both Ghosts.
Ice
Ice is 2× into Grass, Ground, Flying, and Dragon. Ice Shard is priority. See Ice.
| Pair | Who has it |
|---|---|
| Ground/Dragon | Garchomp, Flygon |
| Dragon/Flying | Dragonite, Salamence, Rayquaza |
| Ground/Flying | Landorus-Therian, Gliscor |
| Grass/Ground | Torterra, Toedscruel |
| Grass/Dragon | Flapple, Appletun, Alolan Exeggutor |
| Grass/Flying | Jumpluff, Tropius |
Garchomp takes Ice at 4× on Dragon/Ground. Water and Grass cancel to 1×, and Electric is 0×. Kingambit resists Ice at 0.5× and is the switch. Ice Shard still removes Garchomp if Garchomp stays in. That core is the team-building guide. Yache Berry halves one Ice hit. Tera Steel resists Ice, Fairy, and Dragon.
Dragonite's Multiscale halves the first hit at full HP, so Ice lands at 2× until Stealth Rock's 25% breaks it. Boots or removal is the plan. The Dragon/Flying guide has the Ground immunity. Landorus-Therian, Gliscor, and Toedscruel share the 4× Ice hole. Rotom-Wash takes Ice at 0.5×, and Levitate makes Ground 0×.
Rock
Rock is 2× into Fire, Ice, Flying, and Bug, so every pair below takes 50% from Stealth Rock. See Rock.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Flying | Charizard, Talonflame, Moltres | — |
| Fire/Bug | Volcarona, Centiskorch | — |
| Bug/Flying | Scyther, Yanmega, Vivillon | — |
| Ice/Flying | Articuno | — |
| Ice/Bug | Frosmoth | Fire |
| Fire/Ice | No Pokémon through Gen 9 | — |
Charizard's Rock 4× is worked in the dual-type chart guide. Garchomp and Kingambit each resist Rock at 0.5×. Boots keep the 50% off the entry. A Fire Tera leaves Rock at 2×. A Ground or Steel Tera takes it at 0.5×. Volcarona is the same product, so Quiver Dance waits until that answer is ready.
Fire
Fire is 2× into Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel. Check Torkoal's sun and Pelipper's rain before staying in. See Fire.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Bug/Steel | Scizor, Forretress, Durant | — |
| Grass/Steel | Ferrothorn, Kartana | — |
| Grass/Ice | Abomasnow | — |
| Grass/Bug | Parasect, Leavanny | Flying |
| Ice/Bug | Frosmoth | Rock |
| Ice/Steel | Alolan Sandslash | Fighting |
Scizor and Ferrothorn take Fire at 4×. Rain makes that product 2× before stats. Sun makes it 6×. Heatran and Ceruledge have Flash Fire, so the Fire move deals 0× and boosts their next Fire attack. Dragonite resists Fire at 0.5×. Garchomp takes Fire at 1×, because Dragon's 0.5× and Ground's 2× cancel. Snow raises an Ice-type's Defense and does not weaken Fire, so Abomasnow still leaves when Torkoal is out.
Fairy
Fairy is 2× into Fighting, Dragon, and Dark. All three pairs show up in Generation 9. See Fairy.
| Pair | Who has it |
|---|---|
| Fighting/Dragon | Koraidon, Kommo-o |
| Fighting/Dark | Urshifu (Single Strike), Pangoro |
| Dragon/Dark | Roaring Moon, Hydreigon |
Flutter Mane is immune to Fighting, and Moonblast is 4× into every row here. That answers Koraidon and Single Strike Urshifu. Iron Valiant takes a Fairy attack at 1×. Rapid Strike Urshifu is Fighting/Water, so Fairy into that form stays at 2×. The Urshifu page is the Fighting/Dark form.
Kingambit takes Moonblast at 1×, because Fairy is 2× into Dark and 0.5× into Steel. Iron Head is the attack back. The team-building guide separates those jobs. Gholdengo takes Fairy at 0.5×, and Tinkaton takes it at 0.25×. Tera Steel on Roaring Moon or Hydreigon turns Fairy from 4× into 0.5× and resists Dragon. Hydreigon's Levitate blanks Ground. Fairy still lands at 4×.
Water
Water is 2× into Fire, Ground, and Rock. See Water.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Fire/Ground | Camerupt. Primal Groudon, where that form exists | — |
| Fire/Rock | Hisuian Arcanine, Coalossal | Ground |
| Ground/Rock | Rhyperior, Golem | Grass |
Fire/Ground's only 4× is Water. Hisuian Arcanine and Rhyperior are already in the two-attack table. Dragon resists Water, and Water resists Water, so either is the switch. Tera Grass on Hisuian Arcanine resists the Water 4× and the Ground 4× together.
Grass
Grass is 2× into Water, Ground, and Rock. Rillaboom's Grassy Glide is priority. See Grass.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Water/Ground | Swampert, Gastrodon, Quagsire | — |
| Water/Rock | Barbaracle, Relicanth, Omastar | — |
| Ground/Rock | Rhyperior, Golem | Water |
Swampert has one weakness, and it is 4×. The Water/Ground guide is the long version. Electric is 0×. Charizard resists Grass at 0.25× and is immune to Earthquake, at the price of Charizard's own Rock 4×. Gastrodon in front of Rillaboom is the same Grass product.
Electric
Electric is 2× into Water and into Flying, so one pair exists. See Electric.
Water/Flying is Gyarados and Pelipper. A Ground switch is 0×. Intimidate does not change a special Electric move. Tera Ground makes Electric 0× and removes Flying, so Gyarados is no longer immune to Ground. A KO on Pelipper takes the rain with it. Stealth Rock is 25% here, because Rock is 2× rather than 4×.
Poison
Poison is 2× into Grass and into Fairy. One pair. See Poison.
Grass/Fairy is Whimsicott, Comfey, and Tapu Bulu. Sludge Bomb is 4×. Tera Steel makes Poison 0×, and so do Gholdengo and Scizor.
Psychic
Psychic is 2× into Fighting and into Poison. One pair. See Psychic.
Fighting/Poison is Sneasler and Toxicroak. Psychic and Expanding Force are 4×. Tera Dark, or a Dark switch, makes Psychic 0×. Close Combat is then 2× into that Dark type.
Flying
Flying is 2× into Grass, Fighting, and Bug. See Flying.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Grass/Fighting | Breloom, Hisuian Lilligant, Chesnaught, Hisuian Decidueye | — |
| Fighting/Bug | Heracross, Slither Wing, Buzzwole | — |
| Grass/Bug | Parasect, Leavanny | Fire |
Brave Bird and Acrobatics are 4× into both Grass/Fighting and Fighting/Bug. Corviknight takes Flying at 0.5×, because Steel resists it and Flying is neutral to itself. Spore from Breloom lands first, so the resist has to be awake.
Bug
Bug is 2× into Grass, Psychic, and Dark. See Bug.
| Pair | Who has it |
|---|---|
| Grass/Dark | Meowscarada, Brute Bonnet, Shiftry |
| Grass/Psychic | Exeggutor, Celebi |
| Psychic/Dark | Malamar, Hoopa Unbound |
Meowscarada is the Generation 9 pair. U-turn and Lokix's First Impression are 4×, and First Impression is priority. Charizard and Flutter Mane each resist Bug at 0.25×. Flutter Mane takes Meowscarada's Grass and Dark STABs at 1×.
Steel
Steel is 2× into Ice, Rock, and Fairy. See Steel.
| Pair | Who has it | Second 4× |
|---|---|---|
| Ice/Fairy | Alolan Ninetales | — |
| Rock/Fairy | Carbink, Diancie | — |
| Ice/Rock | Hisuian Avalugg, Aurorus | Fighting |
Alolan Ninetales sets snow and takes Steel at 4×. Snow's 1.5× Defense applies to Scizor's physical Bullet Punch and does not apply to Gholdengo's special Make It Rain. The type product stays 4× either way. Set Aurora Veil and leave. A Fire, Water, or Electric teammate resists Steel at 0.5×.
Ghost and Dark
Ghost and Dark are each 2× into Psychic and into Ghost, so one pair is 4× to both. See Ghost and Dark.
Psychic/Ghost is Calyrex-Shadow, Lunala, Hoopa Confined, and Dawn Wings Necrozma. Shadow Ball and Knock Off are both 4×. Scarlet and Violet have no native of this pair. Tera Dark resists both attacks, so each product becomes 0.5×, and Psychic into that Tera is 0×. A Normal switch is immune to Ghost and takes Dark at 1×.
Use the list on a team sheet
Load the six into the team calculator. The red box lists attacks that hit somebody and hit nobody at 0.5×, 0.25×, or 0×. A 4× can sit outside that box when a teammate resists it. In the team-building guide, Kingambit resists Garchomp's Ice, the box stays quiet, and Ice Shard still removes Garchomp.
Check which member is 4×, which member resists it, and whether that resist outspeeds the priority version: Ice Shard, Grassy Glide, Mach Punch, Bullet Punch, Aqua Jet, or First Impression. The type coverage calculator is the attacking side of the same sheet.
FAQ
How many dual types take 4× damage in Gen 9?
53 pairs on the Generation 6–9 chart. Eight take 4× from two attacks. A single type stops at 2×. Four pairs have no Pokémon through Generation 9: Fire/Ice, Normal/Ice, Normal/Rock, and Normal/Steel.
What does a 4× weakness mean?
The attack is super effective against both defending types, so 2× times 2× is 4×. A weakness times a resistance is 1×. An immunity makes the product 0×.
How do you play around a 4× weakness?
Switch to a resist or an immunity, Terastallize into a type that resists that attack, or block repeated entries with Heavy-Duty Boots, removal, or a resistance Berry. The Berry halves one hit, so it lands at 2×.
Which typings are 4× weak to two attacks?
Fire/Rock (Water and Ground), Ground/Rock (Water and Grass), Rock/Steel (Fighting and Ground), Ice/Rock (Fighting and Steel), Ice/Steel (Fire and Fighting), Ice/Bug (Fire and Rock), Grass/Bug (Fire and Flying), and Psychic/Ghost (Ghost and Dark).
Does Terastallization remove a 4× weakness?
A normal Tera type replaces both defending types. Fire Tera Charizard takes Rock at 2×. Steel or Ground Tera takes Rock at 0.5×. Stellar Tera in raids keeps the original defense.
Are these 4× weaknesses the same in Pokémon GO?
No. This chart uses 2× and 4×. Pokémon GO uses 1.6× and 2.56×, and an immunity deals reduced damage. Use the Pokémon GO type chart.
