Competitive Strategy

Tyranitar is most valuable when its entry changes the board immediately. Sand Stream begins sand on entry, so bring it in on a resisted Fire, Flying, Ghost, Dark, or Psychic attack, or through a slow pivot, rather than exposing its low Speed to a strong neutral hit. Its Rock/Dark typing gives it useful resistances, but Fighting is a 4× weakness; Grass, Water, Bug, Ground, Steel, and Fairy are also super effective. Do not assume its bulk makes a close-combat exchange safe. Choose one job for the set. Stealth Rock turns forced switches into lasting chip. Stone Edge and Crunch provide the core STAB pressure, while Earthquake can punish Steel- and Poison-type answers. A Dragon Dance set needs its checks weakened before it boosts; a utility set should preserve health for repeated weather entries and key switches. Sand can support teammates that benefit from the weather, but it also chips non-Rock, Ground, or Steel partners, so plan the whole six rather than treating it as free value. To counter Tyranitar, keep a Fighting attacker healthy whenever possible. Ground, Water, Grass, Steel, Bug, and Fairy attacks also threaten it, but first check whether its partner can punish the obvious response. Bulky Water- or Fairy-type teammates can help cover Fighting and Ground pressure, while a Flying type can give the team a Fighting immunity. Tyranitar appreciates pivots and hazard support, but it dislikes repeated chip and status.
