Pokemon Type Calculator: Step-by-Step for Team Building
Pokemon Type Calculator: Step-by-Step for Team Building
A type calculator answers a switch question. Lock a core, write down the attacks those Pokémon actually have, count who drops to each incoming type, and only then spend the last slot. This singles sheet uses the Generation 6–9 chart, Fairy included. Kingambit is Generation 9, and Dragapult and Corviknight are Generation 8. An earlier Dark/Steel or Flying/Steel has the same defensive row.
Pokémon GO is a different table. Super effective there is not 2×, and an immunity does not deal 0×. Use the Pokémon GO type chart for raids and GO Battle League.
The draft is Garchomp, Dragapult, Kingambit, Charizard, Corviknight, and Gyarados. One of those six is the wrong hire.
Step 1: Lock three Pokémon before you name six
Six favorites hide which weakness belongs to the core. Three is enough to see it.
Garchomp is Dragon/Ground. Open the Dragon/Ground preset on the dual type calculator and use Show multiplier calculations for the two factors. The Dragon/Ground guide is the same chart. Ice is 4×, because Ice is 2× into both types. Fairy and Dragon stay at 2×. Electric is 0×. Rock is 0.5×. Water and Grass cancel to 1×: each is 2× into Ground and 0.5× into Dragon. Earthquake and Outrage are the STAB. Stone Edge is coverage.
Dragapult is Dragon/Ghost. On Dragon/Ghost there is no 4×. Fighting and Normal are 0×. Ice, Fairy, Dragon, Ghost, and Dark are 2×. Fire, Water, Electric, and Grass are 0.5× from the Dragon resist. The Dragon/Ghost guide is the longer page. Score Shadow Ball and Dragon Darts as STAB. Thunderbolt is on the recommended set, and it is coverage.
Kingambit is Dark/Steel. On Dark/Steel, Fighting is 4×, Ground and Fire are 2×, and Psychic and Poison are 0×. Ice, Dragon, and Rock are 0.5×. Fairy is 1×: Fairy is 2× into Dark and 0.5× into Steel. Iron Head threatens a Fairy. Kingambit does not resist one. Kowtow Cleave is the wrong Fairy click, because Fairy resists Dark. The Dark/Steel guide has the rest of the row.
Multiply, the way the dual-type chart guide does. Garchomp's Ice line is 2 × 2. Kingambit's Fairy line is 2 × 0.5. Garchomp supplies Ground offense and the Electric immunity. Dragapult is the Fighting immunity. Kingambit is the Ice and Dragon resist, plus the Steel attack the Dragons cannot click, because Fairy is immune to Dragon. Speed and win conditions are the balanced team guide, after this skeleton holds.
Step 2: Write the STAB list, then mark the holes
The team calculator does not know moves. Offensive coverage is a separate pass. Use the type effectiveness calculator when a cell is fuzzy, and the counter chart when you need every attacking type that hits a hole.
| Pokémon | STAB | Super effective into | Blank or resisted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garchomp | Earthquake, Outrage | Ground: Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel. Dragon: Dragon. | Earthquake is 0× into Flying. Outrage is 0× into Fairy and 0.5× into Steel. |
| Dragapult | Shadow Ball, Dragon Darts | Ghost: Ghost, Psychic. Dragon: Dragon. | Shadow Ball is 0× into Normal and 0.5× into Dark. Dragon Darts shares Outrage's Fairy and Steel lines. |
| Kingambit | Kowtow Cleave, Iron Head | Dark hits Ghost and Psychic. Steel hits Ice, Rock, and Fairy. | Iron Head is the Fairy attack. Kowtow Cleave is not. |
A hole is a type no STAB row hits for 2×. This core misses Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Flying, Bug, Dark, and Normal. Earthquake into pure Water is 1× and into Flying is 0×. Outrage into a Fairy is 0×, and the lock means you cannot switch to Earthquake until it ends.
Stone Edge and Dragapult's Thunderbolt are coverage, not team slots. Stone Edge is 2× into Flying and 0.5× into Ground, and it misses. Thunderbolt is 2× into Water and Flying, 4× into Water/Flying, and 0× into Ground. Both vanish when that Pokémon faints. STAB then adds 1.5×: Iron Head into a Fairy is 2× from the chart and 1.5× because Kingambit is Steel. The STAB guide walks that stack. It does not change the holes.
Hire the later slots for Water, Ground, and Flying. Thunderbolt hits Water and Flying only while Dragapult is attacking, and it never hits Ground. A Grass hire has not touched that list.
Step 3: Load the core and read past the red box
The team tool opens with Charizard, Swampert, and Klefki already filled in. Click Clear team first, or those three stay in the count. Search Garchomp, Dragapult, and Kingambit on the team calculator. The same form is on the type coverage calculator.
A weakness means 2× or 4×. The red Coverage gaps box lists attacks that hit somebody and hit nobody at 0.5×, 0.25×, or 0×. This core has two.
| Attack | Weak members | Who actually switches | The decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairy | Garchomp 2×, Dragapult 2× | Nobody. Kingambit is 1×, and 1× is not a resist. | Moonblast has no switch. |
| Ground | Kingambit 2× | Nobody. Garchomp and Dragapult take 1×. | Earthquake has no switch. |
Ice is not in that box. Garchomp takes 4×, Dragapult takes 2×, and Kingambit takes 0.5×, so a resist exists and Ice Beam still removes the Garchomp switch. Fighting is the mirror: Kingambit takes 4× and Dragapult takes 0×. Read the weak-members column for every 4× the banner skips.
On the dual-type chart, sort by Fewest weaknesses and turn on Has a 4× weakness before you replace Kingambit. Steel/Fairy has no 4× and is immune to Dragon, and it is still weak to Ground.
Step 4: Add the Pokémon that deletes both red cells
Charizard is Fire/Flying. Confirm it on Fire/Flying. The Fire/Flying guide has the switch notes. Flamethrower and Air Slash are the STAB. Solar Beam is the coverage that comes back in the Water/Ground check.
Ground into Charizard is 0×, so that gap closes even though Kingambit stays 2× weak. Fairy into Charizard is 0.5×, because Fire resists Fairy, so that gap closes too. Moonblast now has a switch. The attack back is still Iron Head: Fire and Flying are both neutral into pure Fairy. Fire STAB also hits Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel. Flying STAB hits Fighting, Bug, and Grass. Water, Ground, Flying, Dark, and Normal stay open.
Rock is the new 4×, 2× into both Fire and Flying. Garchomp and Kingambit resist it, so the red box stays empty. Stealth Rock still removes half of Charizard on entry unless Heavy-Duty Boots are on. The dual-type guide has that entry table. The Moonblast switch and the Rock victim are the same Pokémon, so member five has to answer Fairy without the 4× Rock.
Step 5: Give the closed gaps a second switch
Corviknight is Flying/Steel. Check Flying/Steel and the Flying/Steel guide. Brave Bird, Body Press, Defog, and Roost are the set. Body Press hits Dark, Normal, Ice, Rock, and Steel. It is not STAB, and the team calculator will not show it. If Corviknight faints, Dark and Normal are holes again.
| Attack into Corviknight | Product | Why this is member five |
|---|---|---|
| Ground | 0× | Second Ground immunity, so Charizard can be chipped or stuck behind rocks. |
| Fairy | 0.5× | Second Fairy resist. Moonblast no longer requires Charizard. |
| Dragon | 0.5× | Second Dragon resist beside Kingambit. |
| Rock | 1× | Flying's 2× and Steel's 0.5× cancel. Stealth Rock is one eighth, not one half. |
| Ice | 1× | Not an Ice resist. Not the Garchomp switch. |
| Fighting | 1× | Dragapult still takes the Close Combat. |
Fire is 2× into Corviknight, shared with Kingambit. Garchomp, Dragapult, and Charizard resist it. Electric is also 2×, shared with Charizard, and Garchomp is still immune. Defog clears the rocks before Charizard returns, and it clears your hazards too.
Reload the five. The banner goes green. The columns do not: Ice is still two weak and one resist, Rock is still Charizard's 4× alone, Fairy is two weak and two resists, Ground is one weak and two immunities, and Electric is two weak with no 4× yet. Body Press covers Dark and Normal only while Corviknight is in. Slot six is for Water, Ground, and Flying.
Step 6: Compare two sixth Pokémon while the banner stays green
Both candidates leave the red box empty. The difference is the weak-member count and the three holes.
Gyarados misses the Water hole it was hired for
Gyarados is Water/Flying. Water/Flying and the Water/Flying guide show Electric at 4× and Rock at 2×. Waterfall is super effective into Ground, Rock, and Fire, and not into Water. Water resists Water, so Waterfall into Pelipper is 0.5×. Bounce is neutral into Flying. The recommended Earthquake is 0× into Flying and Levitate. Ground immunity was already on the team twice.
| Attack | Gyarados in slot six | The decision |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | Three weak, including Gyarados at 4×. Charizard and Corviknight at 2×. Garchomp immune, Dragapult 0.5×. | The Ground answer dies to the Electric move Garchomp was there to absorb. |
| Rock | Two weak. Charizard 4×, Gyarados 2×. | Stealth Rock is half on Charizard and a quarter on Gyarados. |
| Ice | Still one resist. Gyarados takes Ice at 1×. | Garchomp's 4× did not get a second switch. |
| Ground | Three immunities. | A third Ground immunity, paid for with Electric and Rock. |
The banner stays green because Garchomp is immune to Electric and Kingambit resists Rock. Green means a switch exists. It does not mean the new Pokémon can stay in.
Rotom-Wash matches the hole list
Rotom-Wash is Electric/Water. Open Electric/Water and the Water/Electric guide. Volt Switch and Hydro Pump are the STAB. Thunderbolt is the same Electric type when you need to stay in.
Volt Switch hits Water and Flying. Hydro Pump hits Ground, Rock, and Fire. Pelipper and an opposing Gyarados take the Electric STAB at 4×, and Garchomp's Earthquake does nothing to them.
| Attack | Rotom-Wash in slot six | Against the Gyarados draft |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | Two weak. Charizard and Corviknight. No 4×. Garchomp is immune. Rotom itself is 1×: Electric resists Electric, and Water is weak to Electric. | The 4× leaves. |
| Rock | One weak. Charizard only. Rotom takes Rock at 1×. | The second Rock weakness leaves. |
| Ice | Two resists. Kingambit and Rotom, both 0.5×. | Garchomp has a backup switch. Dragapult is still wrong. |
| Grass | One weak. Rotom at 2×. Four resists, including Charizard and Corviknight at 0.25×. | Not a gap. |
| Fairy | Still two resists, Charizard and Corviknight. Rotom takes Fairy at 1×. | Not a Fairy switch. |
| Ground | Chart: Kingambit 2×, Rotom 2×, Charizard 0×, Corviknight 0×. | Levitate is separate. |
The table lists Rotom as weak to Ground because Electric is weak to Ground and Water is neutral. Levitate makes that hit 0× in battle. Open Electric/Water with Levitate and keep the base 2× visible. If the Ground move ignores abilities, the switch is Charizard or Corviknight, not Rotom.
- Garchomp, Dragon/Ground
- Dragapult, Dragon/Ghost
- Kingambit, Dark/Steel
- Charizard, Fire/Flying
- Corviknight, Flying/Steel
- Rotom-Wash, Electric/Water
Step 7: Sanity-check the attacks you will actually see
| Threat | Switch | Do not switch |
|---|---|---|
| Ice into Garchomp, 4× | Kingambit or Rotom-Wash, both 0.5× | Dragapult at 2×. Charizard and Corviknight are 1×. |
| Moonblast | Charizard or Corviknight, both 0.5× | Either Dragon. Dragon moves do 0. Iron Head is the attack. |
| Stealth Rock | Boots, or Defog before Charizard returns | Charizard loses half. Gyarados would also have lost a quarter. Corviknight, Dragapult, and Rotom lose an eighth. |
| Earthquake | Charizard or Corviknight at 0×. Rotom only while Levitate holds. | Kingambit at 2×. Garchomp takes 1×, so your Ground type is not the switch. |
| Close Combat into Kingambit, 4× | Dragapult at 0×, or Charizard at 0.5× | Corviknight at 1×. |
| Thunderbolt | Garchomp at 0× | Nobody is 4× weak. Charizard and Corviknight take 2×. The draft's Gyarados took 4×. |
| Heatran | Garchomp's Earthquake is 4× into Fire/Steel. Hydro Pump is 2×. | Heatran's Flash Fire changes Fire, not the Ground row. |
Swampert, Gastrodon, and Quagsire are the hole a green banner cannot see. Water/Ground is 4× weak to Grass and immune to Electric. Hydro Pump cancels to 1×. Earthquake is 1×. Flamethrower is 0.5×. Volt Switch is 0×. Swampert is the worked page. The dual-type guide shows why Grass is the only door.
Solar Beam is Charizard's answer in sun: 4× into Water/Ground, and 2× into pure Water, Ground, and Rock. Outside sun it charges, on the Pokémon rocks already cut in half. If you are not playing sun, swap Rotom-Wash for a Grass type such as Rillaboom. Grass is 4× into Water/Ground and only 1× into Pelipper, because Water's weakness and Flying's resist cancel. Ice weak-count goes from 2 to 3, and Kingambit is again the only Ice resist. Run that column before you keep the swap.
A normal Tera type replaces both defending types. Re-enter that single type before you trust the old row. Stellar, in Tera Raid Battles, keeps the original defense. Items, speed, and win conditions are the next pass, on the balanced team guide.
FAQ
How do you use a Pokémon type calculator to build a team?
Lock two or three Pokémon and read each chart on the dual type calculator. Mark every type their STAB does not hit super effectively. Load them into the team calculator, separate coverage gaps from 4× weaknesses that already have a resist, and recheck the weak-member column after each add.
Why is the team calculator's green banner not enough?
It only checks that every weakness has some resist or immunity. Gyarados leaves this sheet green and still adds an Electric 4× plus a second Rock weakness. Read the weak-member column.
Does Kingambit resist Fairy?
No. Fairy is 2× into Dark and 0.5× into Steel, so Dark/Steel takes 1×. Iron Head is the Fairy attack. Confirm it on Dark/Steel.
Which sixth Pokémon fixes Water, Ground, and Flying holes?
Rotom-Wash. Electric STAB hits Water and Flying. Water STAB hits Ground. Gyarados hits Ground, misses Water and Flying, and adds an Electric 4×. Against Water/Ground, Electric does 0× and Water cancels to 1×, so the sixth is Grass instead, at the cost of another Ice weakness.
Does Levitate show up in the team weakness table?
No. Rotom-Wash shows Ground at 2× on the standard chart. Levitate makes that 0×. Check Electric/Water with Levitate. If the Ground move ignores abilities, switch a Flying type.
Do these team matchups work in Pokémon GO?
No. This is the Generation 6–9 main-series chart: 2×, 0.5×, and 0×. Pokémon GO uses different multipliers, and an immunity does not deal 0×. Use the Pokémon GO type chart.
What the reloaded six should show
Clear the team calculator and search the final six. Ice is two weak and two resists. Rock is one weak. Electric is two weak and one immune. Fairy is two weak and two resists. Ground is two weak on the chart, beside two Flying immunities. Gyarados in place of Rotom-Wash makes Electric three weak and Rock two weak. The banner was green either way.
