Dragon/Steel strategy: Dragon power without the usual Dragon liabilities
Dragon/Steel and Steel/Dragon are the same defensive pairing; this page uses dragon-steel as the canonical URL. Dragon/Steel is a premium defensive-offensive mix because Steel removes several classic Dragon problems while Dragon adds useful Fire and Water neutrality. Representative Pokémon include Dialga, Duraludon, Archaludon, Hisuian Sliggoo, Hisuian Goodra. The standard type chart gives this combination no 4× weakness and 2× weak to Fighting, Ground. It is immune to Poison. Its main defensive value comes from ¼× resists Grass; ½× resists Normal, Water, Electric, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Steel, but stats, ability, item, and format still decide whether a real Pokémon can use those entries repeatedly.
Offensive plan
Dragon STAB supplies broad neutral pressure, while Steel STAB targets Fairy, Ice, and Rock opponents. The important offensive problem is that Steel-types can sit on both sides unless the user carries Fire, Ground, or Fighting coverage. Defensively, the typing gives many switch-in chances but must still respect Fighting and Ground attacks.
Counterplay and defensive risks
To counter Dragon/Steel, start with the chart pressure: Fighting, Ground. If a 4× weakness is listed, preserve that attack type before revealing it; if there is no 4× weakness, repeated 2× pressure and hazard chip usually matter more than a single surprise hit. Scout for abilities, Terastallization, weather, recovery, and pivot moves before assuming the visible multiplier ends the exchange.
Team-building advice
Dragon/Steel pairs well with Flying, Levitate, Fairy, Ghost, or bulky Water teammates that can absorb Ground and Fighting pressure. It also appreciates partners that punish Steel mirrors and bulky Ground answers. Use the Team Calculator to check whether the rest of the six stacks the same Fighting, Ground problem, then compare the full defensive chart before choosing moves or teammates.
