Competitive Strategy

Dialga is a Steel/Dragon legendary that blends special power, bulk, and utility. Flash Cannon threatens Fairy, Ice, and Rock targets, while Dragon coverage pressures many neutral matchups. It can also set Stealth Rock or use coverage such as Earth Power to punish opposing Steel and Fire targets. Its typing gives it many useful resistances and a Poison immunity, making it easier to bring in than many other Dragon types. The weakness profile is Fighting and Ground, both at 2×. Dialga has no 4× weakness from Steel/Dragon typing. Steel cancels many of Dragon's usual defensive problems, so Dragon, Fairy, and Ice attacks are not super effective against standard Dialga. That makes Ground and Fighting coverage the cleanest way to force it out, especially from attackers that can handle its strong special hits. To use Dialga well, bring it in on resisted attacks, set hazards when it forces a switch, and apply pressure with Steel and Dragon attacks rather than treating it as a passive wall. Partners that cover Ground and Fighting, such as Flying, Fairy, or bulky Water teammates, make its entries safer. To counter Dialga, preserve Ground or Fighting pressure, avoid giving it free hazard turns, and chip it down before its bulk lets it trade favorably.
