Fairy Type Guide - Why Fairy is the Best Defensive Type

Fairy type was introduced in Generation 6 to nerf Dragons. It succeeded — and became the most dominant defensive type in competitive Pokemon. Here's why.

Fairy Type Resistances & Immunities

Fairy resists 3 types and is immune to 1:

Resists:

  • Fighting (0.5×)
  • Bug (0.5×)
  • Dark (0.5×)

Immune to:

  • Dragon (0×) — Complete immunity

This is huge. Fairy walls three of the most common offensive types (Fighting, Dark, Dragon) while taking zero damage from Dragon moves.

Fairy Type Weaknesses

Fairy is weak to only 2 types:

  • Poison (2×)
  • Steel (2×)

Both are relatively uncommon offensive types. Most teams don't run dedicated Poison or Steel attackers, making Fairy extremely safe to switch in.

Why Fairy is the Best Defensive Type

1. Dragon Immunity

Dragon was the most broken offensive type in Gens 1-5. Fairy completely shuts it down. A Garchomp locked into Outrage does 0 damage to any Fairy type.

2. Resists Common Offensive Types

Fighting and Dark are everywhere in competitive play:

  • Fighting: Close Combat, Superpower, Drain Punch
  • Dark: Knock Off, Sucker Punch, Crunch

Fairy resists all of them.

3. Uncommon Weaknesses

Poison and Steel coverage is rare. Most physical attackers run Fighting/Dark/Ground coverage. Most special attackers run Fire/Ice/Electric. Neither hits Fairy super effectively.

4. Excellent Dual-Type Combinations

Fairy pairs incredibly well with other defensive types:

Fairy/Steel (Magearna, Zacian):

  • 11 resistances, 2 immunities
  • Only weak to Fire and Ground
  • Best defensive typing in the game

Fairy/Water (Azumarill, Primarina):

  • Resists Fire, Water, Ice, Fighting, Bug, Dark, Dragon
  • Only weak to Grass, Electric, Poison

Fairy/Psychic (Gardevoir, Hatterene):

  • Immune to Dragon
  • Resists Fighting and Psychic
  • Weak to Ghost, Poison, Steel

Fairy Type Strategy Tips

1. Use Fairy Types as Pivot Points

Fairy's resistances make it easy to switch in. Use Fairy types to pivot into Fighting, Dark, or Dragon attacks.

2. Pair with Steel Types

Steel resists Fairy's weaknesses (Poison, Steel). Fairy resists Steel's weaknesses (Fighting, Fire, Ground). They cover each other perfectly.

3. Watch for Poison Coverage

Many Pokemon run Poison coverage specifically to hit Fairy types:

  • Garchomp with Poison Jab
  • Landorus with Sludge Wave
  • Tapu Koko with Poison Jab

4. Abuse Dragon Immunity

If your opponent has a Dragon-type locked into Outrage or Dragon Claw, switch in your Fairy type for a free turn.

Fairy Type in Pokemon GO

Fairy types are equally dominant in Pokemon GO:

Best Fairy Attackers:

  • Togekiss (Charm + Dazzling Gleam)
  • Gardevoir (Charm + Dazzling Gleam)
  • Sylveon (Charm + Moonblast)

Fairy Type in Raids:

  • Essential for Dragon-type raid bosses (Rayquaza, Palkia, Dialga)
  • Resists Fighting moves in Fighting-type raids

Conclusion

Fairy is the best defensive type in Pokemon because:

  1. Dragon immunity — shuts down the former king of types
  2. Resists Fighting, Dark, Bug — common offensive types
  3. Weak to Poison, Steel — uncommon offensive types
  4. Excellent dual-type combos — Steel/Fairy, Water/Fairy, Psychic/Fairy

If you're building a defensive core, include a Fairy type. It's the most reliable defensive typing in competitive Pokemon.
