Dragon Type Weakness - How to Beat Dragon Pokemon in 2026

Dragon types are some of the most powerful Pokemon in the game. Garchomp, Dragonite, Rayquaza, Dragapult — they dominate competitive play with high stats and excellent coverage. But every Dragon has a weakness.

Dragon Type Weaknesses

Dragon is weak to exactly 3 types:

  1. Ice (2×) — The most reliable Dragon counter
  2. Dragon (2×) — Dragons beat Dragons, but it's a double-edged sword
  3. Fairy (2×) — Complete immunity to Dragon moves + super effective back

Why Fairy is the Best Dragon Counter

Fairy type is immune to Dragon moves. This is huge. A Garchomp locked into Outrage does literally 0 damage to any Fairy type.

Best Fairy counters for Dragons:

  • Sylveon — Pixilate Hyper Voice destroys Dragons. 130 SpDef tanks Dragon Pulse.
  • Clefable — Magic Guard + Unaware ignores Dragon Dance boosts. Moonblast OHKOs most Dragons.
  • Gardevoir — Fairy/Psychic with Moonblast and Psychic coverage.
  • Togekiss — Air Slash flinch + Dazzling Gleam. Serene Grace makes it annoying.
  • Magearna — Steel/Fairy resists Dragon AND is immune to it. Fleur Cannon hits like a truck.

Why Ice Moves are Essential

You don't need an Ice-type Pokemon — you just need Ice-type moves. Many Water types learn Ice Beam, making them excellent Dragon checks:

  • Ice Beam on Blastoise/Swampert — Surprise KO on Garchomp and Dragonite
  • Ice Shard on Mamoswine — Priority move picks off weakened Dragons
  • Freeze-Dry on Lapras — Hits Water/Dragon types (Palkia, Kingdra) super effectively
  • Ice Punch on Weavile — Fastest Ice attacker, revenge kills most Dragons

The 4× Ice Weakness Club

Some Dragon types take 4× damage from Ice:

  • Garchomp (Dragon/Ground) — Ice Beam = instant KO
  • Dragonite (Dragon/Flying) — Ice Shard can OHKO
  • Rayquaza (Dragon/Flying) — The most extreme case
  • Salamence (Dragon/Flying) — Same as Dragonite
  • Landorus (Ground/Flying) — Not Dragon, but same 4× Ice weakness

If you see any of these on your opponent's team, bring Ice coverage. Period.

Dragon vs Dragon

Using Dragon moves against Dragons is effective but risky — you take super effective damage too. Best Dragon-slaying Dragons:

  • Dragapult (Dragon/Ghost) — 142 Speed outspeeds almost every Dragon. Dragon Darts + Shadow Ball.
  • Garchomp — Outrage hits hard, but getting locked in is dangerous against Fairy switches.
  • Kyurem-Black — 170 Attack with Fusion Bolt + Dragon Claw covers everything.

Countering Specific Dragons

How to Beat Garchomp

  • Best counter: Any Fairy type (immune to Outrage/Dragon Claw)
  • Ice Beam from any Water type OHKOs (4× weak)
  • Watch out for: Swords Dance + Scale Shot, Stone Edge for Ice types
  • Full Garchomp guide →

How to Beat Dragonite

  • Best counter: Ice Shard from Mamoswine or Weavile (4× weak, bypasses Multiscale with prior damage)
  • Stealth Rock strips Multiscale on switch-in
  • Fairy types wall it completely
  • Watch out for: Dragon Dance + Extreme Speed priority
  • Full Dragonite guide →

How to Beat Dragapult

  • Best counter: Dark types (Tyranitar, Greninja) — resist Ghost STAB
  • Fairy types — immune to Dragon, resist nothing else from Dragapult though
  • Watch out for: Extremely fast (142 Speed), mixed attacker, U-turn pivoting
  • Full Dragapult guide →

How to Beat Salamence

  • Best counter: Ice moves (4× weak), Fairy types
  • Stealth Rock chips 25% on every switch
  • Watch out for: Dragon Dance + Moxie snowballing, Mega Salamence's Aerilate
  • Full Salamence guide →

Best Anti-Dragon Team Core

Build your team with at least 2 of these to handle Dragons:

  1. Fairy type (Sylveon, Clefable, or Magearna) — Your primary Dragon check
  2. Ice coverage (Ice Beam on a Water type) — Backup for 4× weak Dragons
  3. Steel type (Ferrothorn, Corviknight) — Resists Dragon, provides hazards

Example core:

  • Clefable (Fairy) — Unaware walls Dragon Dance sweepers
  • Swampert (Water/Ground) — Ice Beam for Garchomp, resists Rock moves
  • Ferrothorn (Grass/Steel) — Stealth Rock + Leech Seed, resists Dragon

Dragon Type in Pokemon GO

In Pokemon GO raids, Dragon types are best countered by:

  1. Mega Gardevoir — Charm + Dazzling Gleam (Fairy)
  2. Shadow Mamoswine — Powder Snow + Avalanche (Ice)
  3. Mega Rayquaza — Dragon Tail + Outrage (Dragon vs Dragon)
  4. Shadow Dragonite — Dragon Tail + Outrage
  5. Galarian Darmanitan — Ice Fang + Avalanche

For GO Battle League PvP:

  • Togekiss dominates Dragon types in Master League
  • Azumarill (Water/Fairy) walls Dragons in Great League
  • Alolan Ninetales (Ice/Fairy) double-counters Dragons

Key Takeaways

  1. Always carry Ice coverage — Ice Beam on a Water type costs you nothing and handles most Dragons
  2. Fairy types are mandatory — At least one Fairy on every competitive team
  3. Stealth Rock matters — 25% chip on Dragonite/Salamence/Charizard every switch
  4. Don't rely on Dragon vs Dragon — It's a coin flip; Fairy is safer
  5. Scout for coverage moves — Good Dragon players carry Poison Jab (for Fairies) or Iron Head (for Fairies)
